Five killed in accident

Five persons were yesterday killed in an accident involving a trailer loaded with metals and a commuter bus in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The crash occurred in the evening at Ugwu Nwasike junction when the ill-fated trailer collided with an oncoming commuter bus which resulted to the death of five passengers while others sustained injuries.

The casualties were mainly occupants of the bus while the trailer driver and conductor fled the scene to avoid lynching.

The trailer, marked XE 808 JJT, was coming from the Ogidi building materials end to Ugwunwasike round-about while the bus was coming from the Ugwunwasike roundabout to the Ogidi building materials market when both had a head-on coalition.

Confirming the incident, the Ogidi Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr. Hassan Musa, said: “The dead victims were trapped when we arrived and we tried to bring them out, but the injured victims have been rushed to Iyienu Hospital.

He, however, said only three persons died in the incident and urged motorists to always avoid overspeeding.
